Do I need a NIE to work in Spain?

IT DEPENDS, A potential employer might ask for both your NIE and social security number before offering you a contract. However, employers can hire employees from the EU with just their passport or EU ID card and social security number. The problem is that many employers do not know about this option or do not want to hire employees without an NIE. In Madrid, to apply for the green NIE card with the work option, you would already need to start working for the employer.

Do I need photos for the NIE application?

NO, if you are from the EU, you don’t need photos for the NIE application in Madrid, as there is no photo on the NIE card or NIE number documents.

Do I need a CITA PREVIA in Madrid to get a NIE?

YES, to process your NIE in Madrid, you need to register for an appointment here. The page and instructions are only available in Spanish, and the waiting time depends on the number of applicants trying to get an appointment at the same time.

Can I get a NIE without a job contract?

YES, there are other ways to obtain a NIE card besides showing a job contract. These are the following alternatives:

  • Being a student with a valid European health card or private health insurance
  • Having a family member living in Spain (with a NIE card or Spanish ID)
  • Proving that you have enough funds to live in Spain as well as private health insurance
  • Being self-employed (autónomo)

You can also apply for the NIE number if you have valid proof that you need it for some administrative task, such as buying a property or starting a company.

Can NIE Madrid help me find work/a job contract?

NO, NIE Madrid is happy to advise you about the documents you need to present to the foreign police, supply you with the forms that you and/or your employer need to fill out to obtain your NIE, and help you with the necessary paperwork. However, we cannot assist you in finding work or providing a job contract.

Is empadronamiento necessary for getting a NIE in Madrid?

IT DEPENDS, If the application is done at the main Madrid office (Padre Piquer 18), empadronamiento is usually not required to obtain a NIE card. However, be aware that this might vary depending on your personal circumstances, and in some cases, they might ask for proof of address.
